It also seems to be a software problem, since it works under Windows/Bootcamp (!) It looks like incompatibility between MacOS and this iiyama model (or I guess this DisplayPort version). Is it possible that my external display isn't compatible ? I've tested the cable, adapter and screen with another computer and everything works fine. This should mean that you can daisy chain (at least) two displays that support DisplayPort 1.2, meaning that you can get multiple external displays with the Macbooks without using the Thunderbolt Display.

If anyone reading this has connected a late 2013 15" MacBook Pro to a Studio Display (or anyone using TB2->TB3 with an older Mac like this), it would be great to hear whether you get flickering in the 2560x1440 resolution.I'm trying to connect a MacBook Pro 16" to my external display through DisplayPort with these devices :

I'm stumped for now, and can only hope it might one day get fixed with a Studio Display firmware update - though of course I don't know if that's where the problem is coming from. Putting the 2021 MBP into low resolution 2560x1440 on the Studio Display is fine - no flickering, so the Studio Display handles the resolution, at least when connected with TB3.Ĭonnecting the 2013 MBP to a native Benq 2560x1440 panel connected with Mini DisplayPort to Displayport is also fine. I've now tried two different TB3->TB2 adapters and two different TB2 male-male cables with the same problem, so am assuming it's not defective cabling.

I tried a new 0.5m Apple Thunderbolt 2 male-male cable but this hasn't helped.

Update 2 ref the flickering which is the only real problem now: Especially if you have any suggestions for addressing any of the above issues. Would be interested to hear from anyone else who has tried this, or a similar, combination with a Studio Display. Not a big problem, and I believe this is a known limitation of the Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 adapter more than anything else. The Studio Display won't charge the 2013 MacBook Pro.I'm guessing this is more to do with being stuck on macOS 11 Big Sur, and it's not a deal breaker as I can use an external webcam, but is there a way to make this work? The Studio Display webcam doesn't work with the 2013 MacBook Pro, although the speakers are fine. Not a big problem, as connecting the dock directly to the 2013 MacBook Pro is fine, but should USB 3 pass-through work through the Studio Display? This all works fine with the 2021 MacBook Pro, but only the USB2 sockets work with the 2013 MacBook Pro. I have a Dell USB 3 dock ( ) with DisplayLink hdmi & displayport outputs, USB2 & 3 sockets, and gigabit ethernet, attached to one of the Studio Display's downstream USB-C ports.I have ordered another thunderbolt cable to check that, but should the Studio Display support this resolution? I know the MacBook Pro supports this resolution, so am assuming this is either a cable issue or Studio Display incompatibility. It's not unusable, but is noticeable and annoying. Although 2560x1440 (60Hz) works, there is some minor flickering on the Studio Display. Is there a way to force 2560x1440 by default without having to use ScreenResX? I thought 60Hz 4k should work, any ideas why it doesn't? Using ScreenResX to force it to 2560x1440 (60Hz) works. By default, the 2013 MBP tries to use 60Hz 4k but with this the Studio Display screen is blank other than some flickering.

But I have these issues in order of priority: To my surprise, using the Apple Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 adapter ( Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) to Thunderbolt 2 Adapter - Apple (UK) with a male-male thunderbolt 2 cable mostly works. I primarily use my Studio Display with a late 2021 16" M1 Pro MacBook Pro (macOS 12 Monterey) and this combination is great, but am also interested in using it with my late 2013 15" MacBook Pro (macOS 11 Big Sur latest supported) as a backup.
